8-Day Silent Meditation Retreat near Kathmandu

Kathmandu · Pharping · 8 days

from $690
deposit $69 now

Overview

This is a supported silent retreat in the wooded hills of Pharping, on the southern rim of the Kathmandu Valley. Unlike a fully self-directed course, a teacher guides the practice and you keep your own room, which makes a first silent retreat more approachable.

The days hold noble silence: sitting and walking meditation, simple vegetarian meals taken in quiet, and short daily instructions from the teacher. Phones are handed in at the gate, and the forest does the rest.

Accommodation is a simple room among the pines, with dal bhat and other vegetarian food. Some prior meditation experience helps, but committed beginners who want to try silence in a safe, guided setting are welcome.

From our visit (June 2026)
Sita: “I spent a night and a morning here between programs, so I saw the silence up close. Handing in the phone at the gate is the moment it starts. Having a teacher and your own room makes it far gentler than a self-run course. The forest is genuinely still; I heard mostly wind and birds.

Questions & answers

Is this a good first silent retreat?

Yes. A teacher guides the practice, you keep your own room, and daily instructions are given, which makes silence more approachable than a fully self-directed course. Some prior meditation helps but is not required.

Can I use my phone during the retreat?

No. Phones are handed in at the gate to support the silence, and returned when you leave. The grounds are kept quiet for sitting and walking meditation.

What are the meals like?

Simple vegetarian food, including dal bhat, taken in silence. Vegan and other dietary needs can usually be met if you tell the operator when you request your dates.
