Vipassana Centers in Nepal: Dhamma Shringa & Beyond

How Many Vipassana Centers Does Nepal Have?
Nepal has around 18 Vipassana centers and course locations in the S.N. Goenka tradition, one of the densest networks anywhere relative to the country's size. Every center is donation-based and run by trusts and volunteers, every one teaches the identical 10-day course, and every application goes through the official network at dhamma.org. We take no commission on any of them; this directory exists because choosing a center is the first practical decision an applicant makes.
If Vipassana itself is new to you, start with our complete guide to Vipassana in Nepal, which explains the technique, the rules, and the daily rhythm. This page maps where you can sit.
The Center Directory
The three centers most travellers use are Dhamma Shringa, Dhamma Pokhara, and Dhamma Janani, because they sit on the main travel triangle of Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lumbini. The regional centers serve their districts and run fewer courses in English.
| Center | Location | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Dhamma Shringa | Budhanilkantha hills, north Kathmandu | Nepal's main center, established 1986; room for roughly 250 students and the fullest course calendar |
| Dhamma Pokhara | Near Begnas Lake, about 13 km southeast of Pokhara | Quiet rural setting away from Lakeside; pairs well with time in Pokhara before or after |
| Dhamma Janani | Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace | Running since 2000; sitting a course at the source carries obvious meaning for many students |
| Dhamma Kitti | Kirtipur, Kathmandu Valley | Smaller valley alternative when Shringa's dates are full |
| Dhamma Chitawan | Chitwan, southern lowlands | Regional center on the Terai plain |
| Dhamma Birata | Itahari, eastern Nepal | Serves the east; useful if your route runs through Biratnagar |
Beyond these, the network runs course locations in Tansen, Birgunj, Ilam, Surkhet, Dang, and other districts. Schedules, seat counts, and travel notes change through the year, so treat dhamma.org as the single source of truth and this table as the map.
How Do You Reach the Main Centers?
Dhamma Shringa is about an hour by taxi from central Kathmandu, in the forested Budhanilkantha hills above the city; confirmed students receive current directions, and taxis know the area. Dhamma Pokhara sits near Begnas Lake, roughly 13 kilometres southeast of Pokhara's Lakeside, a 30–40 minute taxi ride. Dhamma Janani is inside the wider Lumbini area in southern Nepal: reachable by a short domestic flight to Bhairahawa or a long day's drive from Kathmandu. In every case, plan to arrive on the opening afternoon with buffer for delays; late arrival can forfeit your seat.
Which Center Should You Choose?
Choose by course date first, location second. Every center teaches the identical course, so the "best" center is the one with a confirmed seat on dates your trip can honour. When several fit, the practical tiebreakers favour Dhamma Shringa for first-timers: the most courses, the largest capacity, and the shortest hop from the international airport. Choose Dhamma Pokhara if your trip centres on Pokhara and you want rural quiet, and Dhamma Janani if sitting at Lumbini itself matters to you. Applying is the same six-step process everywhere; our guide to how to apply for Vipassana in Nepal walks through it, waitlists included.
What Should You Expect at Any of Them?
The same course, everywhere. Ten days of noble silence, a 4:00 am wake-up bell, roughly ten hours of meditation across the day, simple vegetarian meals, and separate quarters for men and women. Facilities vary from center to center; the discipline and the teaching do not. The full hour-by-hour rhythm is in our guide to the 10-day Vipassana course, and timing your course inside a longer trip is covered in the best time for a retreat in Nepal.
If the calendars don't fit your trip, or ten silent days is more than you want this time, a supported retreat with a teacher on hand and dates you choose is a fully legitimate alternative.
